International gold prices are heading towards their steepest weekly decline in more than four months. Rising oil prices, renewed inflation concerns and expectations that US interest rates may remain elevated for longer are weighing on the precious metal.
For Ghana’s gold industry, understanding these developments requires looking beyond the international spot price. Currency movements, official local pricing, purity, valuation and regulatory requirements all influence the local trading environment.
What is happening in the global gold market?
Reuters reported on Friday that spot gold was trading around US$4,016 per troy ounce in early Asian trading, down approximately 3.6% for the week. Prices had earlier reached their lowest level since July.
These figures represent reported market snapshots rather than a confirmed closing price. Nevertheless, the weekly movement reflects a market facing renewed pressure from energy prices and interest-rate expectations.
Three forces putting pressure on gold
1. Higher oil prices are reviving inflation concerns
Rising oil prices, amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, have increased concerns about energy-driven inflation. If energy costs remain elevated, inflation could prove more persistent than anticipated.
2. Interest-rate expectations are changing
Gold does not pay interest. When investors expect interest rates to remain higher for longer, interest bearing assets can become more attractive relative to gold.
Markets are therefore watching the US Federal Reserve’s 27–28 October meeting and the upcoming US Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation report for further indications of the monetary policy outlook.
3. Investor positioning and market sentiment matter
Changes in the US dollar, Treasury yields and futures market positioning can influence gold prices. These forces can add to selling pressure even when geopolitical uncertainty continues to support demand for gold as a perceived safe-haven asset.
The result is a market in which opposing forces are operating simultaneously.
What does this mean for Ghana?
International gold prices are important, but they do not tell the entire story of Ghana’s gold market.
Ghana’s official local gold purchase pricing framework uses the relevant LBMA Gold Price AM or PM benchmark and the applicable Bank of Ghana Reference Rate.
GoldBod’s published PM purchase price for Thursday, 22 October 2026, was GH¢11,174.00 per troy pound.
This is a dated reference and should not be treated as Friday’s price. Market participants should check the applicable official pricing window before making pricing or trading decisions.
Other considerations include the applicable exchange rate, gold purity, valuation, transaction costs and the regulatory requirements governing the transaction.
What should market participants watch next?
1. 27–28 October: The US Federal Reserve policy meeting.
2. 29th October: The US PCE inflation report.
3. Energy markets: Further oil price increases could intensify inflation concerns.
4. The US dollar and Treasury yields: Movements in these markets may affect gold’s relative attractiveness.
5. Ghana’s official pricing updates: The applicable GoldBod purchase price should be verified before transactions are priced.
These developments may influence market direction, but none guarantees that gold will rise or fall.
The Sikamine perspective
At Sikamine Gold Trading Ltd, we believe that informed decisions begin with credible information, disciplined analysis and responsible trading practices.
Periods of price volatility reinforce the importance of verifying official pricing information, assessing transaction margins carefully, maintaining complete records and managing working capital prudently.
A falling price is a market signal to analyse, not proof that the market has reached its bottom. Equally, a recovery should not be assumed simply because prices have declined.
The coming week’s economic data and central bank decisions may provide further insight, but uncertainty remains.
Our key takeaway: Understanding the forces behind gold price movements is an essential part of responsible participation in the gold value chain.
